Meticulous writer and inventive director, Anurag Kashyap is very fond of offbeat flicks and has forever shown a penchant for experimenting with virgin concepts and themes in his projects. His latest film on the block is the queer looking ‘No Smoking’. Kumar Mangat is producing this unusual stuff in association with the musician turned filmmaker Visal Bharadwaj. Starring hunk John Abraham and the eye candy Ayesha Takia, this film witnesses the coming together of two geniuses, Vishal Bharadwaj and Gulzar Saab. With these two outstanding talents coming together, one can expect some excellent avant-garde musical stuffs. And happily the two have come up with fabulous musical voyages. The soundtrack blows off with ‘Jab Bhi Cigarette’ hailed as the title track of the film. This track initially buzzes off with a jazz version that manages to craft apt mood and feel with its gaudy beats and arrangements. This song is about the mental makeup of a guy badly given to smoking inspite of knowing its hazardous impact. A typical Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar track, it is rendered in a great fashion by Adnan Sami whose brilliant rendition gives it a high kick. Stupendous beginning!
Then there is another version of this track whined out by Sunidhi Chauhan. It is different from the earlier one in both temper and stance and instead of incorporating a jazzy feel it is styled as a club track with oodles of style and peck of attitude. This one is sure to rock at all discs, clubs and pubs!
‘Phoonk De’ comes from Rekha Bharadwaj of ‘Namak Issak Ka’fame. This sultry and sizzling track is catchy enough to roll into your tongue at the very first hearing. The beats are over and done with the 'club mix' version of this song, which comes with a rustic feel. Rekha can surely look forward to winning the top slot with this hypnotizing number. She croons out this track with perfect ease and at an unhurried pace that imparts it an intoxicating charm.
Sukhwinder Singh croons the male version of this track in his own unique fashion. The lyrics are unlike the first one and an annotation by a female, which comes in the middle of the track, is haunting. This track is pacy and is done up with western arrangements with some excellent lyrics flowing out of Gulzar’s pen.
After the previous two tracks, the third one too centers on the focal theme. ‘Kash Laga’ is encumbered with Sufi music that adds to its enticing appeal. Crooned out by the likes of Sukhwinder Singh, Daler Mehndi and Vishal Bhardwaj, it is purely a situational one.
The concluding track of the album is ‘Ash Tray’ which marks the debut of a new singing talent Deva Sen Gupta in the film domain. A contemplative feel smites this blue track. The entire song is drenched in enticing melody and aptly compliments the mood and subject of the flick.
Anurag Kashyap treads into an unchartered territory with this flick that also boasts of fabulous music tilted against the same subject. Kudos to the composer and lyricist for a fantabulous job. ‘Phoonk De’ and ‘Jab Bhi Cigarette’ are the tracks to trip on.
